So when we load three yaks we load the center one (call it "B") and tie it to the towers then we add the left side (call it "A") and tie it to both B and the cross bars; then we add the right side (call it "C") and tie it to both B and the cross bars - so each kayak is tied to another kayak (A+B and B+C) and those lashing straps are alternately tie to the cross bars or the tower - this way if any one fails there are minimally two other redundant systems holding the trio in place and it also reduces Glasses are branches, The brand can be ugly.
