Definitely head down to the hardware store and pick up some quality ratcheting straps for $20 or so. They sit very high on the car (there are others on the market that sit much lower)And if you lose the manual then fitting at the correct distance could be a problem, as the X1 has no marks on the side rails to help where to position the rack.
